Stabilising Clandon Embankment

After emergency speed restrictions were imposed due to ground movement, Solum Saxum were brought in to assess and stabilise the Clandon railway embankment. Working with SEP Design Ltd and Network Rail, we delivered a detailed ground model, carried out slope stability analysis, and designed cost-effective remedial works - all to a fast-track programme.

Our approach

  1. Desk study We reviewed and collated the available data and ground model to establish a design ground model which adhered to current UK guidance and used ‘characteristic’ material parameters.
  2. Site walkover Our team spent time on site to gain an in-depth understanding of the challenge and to undertake slope stability analysis of the existing slope, identifying likely failure mechanisms.
  3. Conceptual Site Model (CSM) We designed and presented preliminary remedial options, then working with our partners we refined and then produced a detailed design of chosen solution.
  4. Risk Classification SEP and Network Rail were provided with regular Reporting and Design Recommendations including earthwork remedial recommendations and solutions.

Solum Saxum’s expertise and flexible, professional approach were invaluable in ensuring this critical infrastructure project could progress safely and efficiently.

The results

  1. A flexible working partnership Our flexible working allowed design timeframes to align with a strict design and build programme, which allowed the partnership to deliver the scheme as planned allowing the line to be re-opened at full speed on time.
  2. 10% cost reduction Recommendations that optimised construction, reducing costs by 10% while meeting safety standards.
  3. A rock-solid solution The solution stabilised the existing embankment preventing future failures.
